Human kind is for its survival dependent on functions - ecosystem services - the life supporting systems provided by Earth. The current trend is that people gradually reduce the capacity of many of these systems; with the effect of future capital erosion. A biosphere reserve adds a unifying role and through learning processes link different actors in a strategic way. Biosphere reserves are areas that show good examples of how land use and conservation can go hand in hand. These areas are pilot areas where new approaches and new knowledge is tested in order to achieve a sustainable society.
VISION of the Swedish MAB programme
Society ensures the basis for human welfare through conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of ecosystem services.
AIM of the Swedish MAB programme
To create conditions for biosphere reserves to serve as model areas for sustainable development and to stimulate research that strengthens the role of biosphere reserves in learning about sustainable use of ecosystem services.
Interact and inspire to transfer experience and knowledge from the model areas.
Ecosystem services
Functions of the ecosystems, which in some way benefit mankind, that is, maintain or improve human well-being.
